PORT Moresby National High School (POMNATHS) is one of the five national high schools in the country and aims for a good academic result and to be self-reliant.
The school is the most recent of the four national high schools established in 1996. The school has more than 600 students with 50 staff, which includes academic and support staff. According to principal David Diowai, POMNATHS had a high standard of discipline, which has contributed towards the school’s achievement of academic excellence. “The school always strives to maintain this reputation all the time,” he said. Diowai said POMNATHS has set a benchmark for being among the top five secondary schools in the country. “The school is always ranked among the top five secondary schools in the country for its academic excellence. And of the total number of students that graduated every year around 50 per cent get selected by Office of Higher Education for further studies,” he said. Diowai said they encouraged smaller class sizes for closer interaction between teachers and students. He said the maximum class size was 39 students which would be reduced to 35 students per class. “The school lives up to its mission and vision, which is Do Great Things with God’s Help,” Diowai said. He added that POMNATHS faced problems of class sizes, facilities and resources but strived to produce the best in the country. “Producing the best is not all, the school encourages students to be good role model and have a good relationship with the surrounding community,” he said.
