THE data on schools, teachers and students used by the Education Department needs updating, according to PNG Teachers’ Association general secretary Ugwalubu
Mowana. He said while the Government in the past three years had given the people “a very ambitious agenda on education”, officials failed to pay to schools the tuition fee-free subsidy promised. The State had allocated K6 billion to education in the past three years. “PNGTA calls on the education heads to explain the scenario facing schools relating to the shortfall in the distribution of funds (subsidies),” he said. “If the data on students, teachers and schools in the system is not updated, the well-intended Government policy on education will not achieve its outcome.” He said the blame must be squarely put on the Department of Education and its agencies for not advising the Government well on the implementation of the TFF policy. “The responsible committee must present the data to government in order to deliver its policy and to restore confidence in it,” he said. He said the Department of Education should update the data so that the funds could be distributed fairly. At least three schools in Madang have closed because of the lack of funds.
