THE Government’s tuition fee free education policy has kept parents countrywide from spending about K1.8 billion for student’s school fees over the past three years.
Finance Minister James Marape said this during Port Moresby National High School’s graduation ceremony yesterday. "Free education means that parents have kept in their pockets K605 million for three years. "There had been complaints that the free education was not working as education infrastructures deteriorated and lacked the capacity to cater for the increase in student enrolments and teachers’ welfare not considered. However Minister Marape said the government has considered these plights by allocating monies for educational infrastructures in the schools in the 2015 Budget. This he said included allocations of K3 million to each district totaling K267 million for building teachers’ houses, and classrooms for elementary, primary and high schools.
