The Papua New Guinea University of Technology will continue to provide the best for its students following the launch of a new two-storey dormitory for the male students. Contractor, Niugini Builders took almost three years to complete the building. The building contains fifty-eight rooms that could fit 116 students. It has six ablution blocks, three on the ground floor and three upstairs, a laundry area found on each side of the wing and five laundry lines at the end of the building. Each floor of the building has a kitchen, storage, dining and computer rooms and a self-contained room purposefully for the sub-warden located on ground floor. The building project cost about K10.1 million and took almost three years to complete. Acting Vice Chancellor, Professor John Pumwa during the launch thanked the former management for the initiative to establish the project in 2011. Professor Pumwa urged students to be responsible and take ownership of the building. He said the building project would cater for the increase in the admission of students into the university. He added that it will benefit students in their years studying at the Unitech. Professor Pumwa warned that any student caught destroying school properties would be terminated. Representatives from the Office of the Higher Education and the Treasury Department in Waigani were present to witness the occasion. Dorcas Horis from Treasury department shared Professor Pumwa’s sentiments and said occupants must look after the building. Director Student Services, Ian Leklek said occupants of the new dormitory had been pre-allocated rooms according to their academic performances. Rooms were allocated to the top students in second and third year from each of the 13 academic departments. Meanwhile, Professor Pumwa thanked the National Planning and the Treasury Department for their continuous support towards Unitech despite the negativity and problems encountered in the past years.
