THE Department of Education is ready and will start rolling out several major government policies in the country, acting Education Secretary Eliakim Apelis said.
Speaking at the launching of the tuition fee free education, commodity component trial in Southern Highlands last week, Mr Apelis said his officers were working hard to implement major transformational policies in the country that would see the standard and quality of education in the country lifted to another level. He said the first task for the department was to implement the standard based curriculum to schools throughout the country starting next year after the government abolishes the outcome based education (OBE) curriculum. "My department is working hard and by 2015 the new standard based curriculum will be implemented by schools throughout the country," he said. Mr Apelis said the department has also been implementing the tuition fee free education policy for the last two years and was implementing the second part of it, the delivery of the commodity component through the pubic private partnership (PPP). He said the other major challenge is the implementation of the construction of two double classrooms and the two teachers’ houses starting next year over the next five years. He said the department has also been challenged to implement the e-learning program for schools throughout the country where all schools will be hooked up to the internet for their learning. Mr Apelis said his departments has been challenged by well qualified leaders. He said his officers are now busy with the framing of the department budget for 2015 which should be realistic and focused on improving the standard and quality of education in the country.
