STARTING 2017 there will be in-country scholarships piloted at the PNG National Polytechnic Institution. The Department of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology have been working with the Australian High Commission and industry representatives to upgrade facilities and transform the institution into a training hub. This is according to the Department of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology Acting deputy secretary Steven Matainaho. Mr Matainaho was speaking at the graduation of 37 students that attended TAFE programs in various institutions in Australia on Wednesday. These scholarships are funded by the PNG government and similar to the TAFE programs offered overseas, especially Australia. At the same time, overseas TAFE scholarships will be maintained for students’ applicants. Also, the government will be anchoring the scholarship program in-country specifically to technical institutions that are in the process of improving post-secondary technical education standards. Mr Matainaho said the government has injected a massive K300 million to the higher and technical education sector. Of the K300 million, K 120 million has gone to capital investment and rehabilitation works of the post-secondary Technical and Vocational Training Education. He said by 2018, the in-country training program will be anchored in PNG specifically to technical institutions that are in the process of improving post-secondary technical education standards. I am really interested to hear that our TVET schools in County look forward for scholarship because when there are scholarships at TAFE Australia, it makes our TVET schools as unproductive. We does produce many technical man and woman in our country because I am really thinking about minimas unemployment and olso thinking about our developing country need to be developed.
