The 2014-2016 salary agreement signed between the Government and the PNG Teachers Association has been honoured, Teaching Service Commission (TSC) chairman Baran Sori says. He said all teachers’ pay and other allowances and entitlements were paid as scheduled but if teachers suspected they were not paid at correct levels, they should communicate that through their provincial education office. Sori said primary, high schools and secondary schools, technical institutions and teachers colleges base levels were all increased in line with the agreement. “We have elevated the base level for primary schools from TSO1 to TSO2, for high schools and secondary schools the teaching commission has agreed to elevate it from TSO3 to TSO4 and for technical institutions and teachers colleges the base level moved from TSO5 to TSO6,” Sori said. “Each of the school system base level was elevated by one level. “The issue was that the base level has moved up but it doesn’t mean all other positions above the base level have moved up by one, that is where the misunderstanding was.” TSC commissioner on policy Samson Wangihomie said teachers were paid on their acting positions through to the last day of school and during Christmas holidays they were paid for their base position. “We would now appeal to the Department of Education and general education service to advertise the vacant positions in all institutions so that teachers could apply and win positions to be substantive, consistent with the reclassified base levels of the institutions. That’s the solution”, Wangihomie said. He said irregular appointments caused teachers not to apply for positions.
