THE Department of Education has become the first government organisation to go paperless, meaning everything will be done electronically. Education Secretary Dr Uke Kombra said that the department had adopted the practice since August 9 last year and decided to officially announce it yesterday. "In Papua New Guinea, for a number of years, different organisations have been talking about going paperless so that we use less paper in meetings, forums and operations. "The Department of Education, the Teaching Service Commission and the office of National Library and Archives, that come under the ministry of Education agreed in 2016 that we will use technology as far as possible so that we could try to be efficient, more economical and see more improvement in our service delivery in schools and for teachers," Dr Kombra said. He said that the paperless system was a time-saving method and effective cost-saving measure, and need funding to ensure all officers have access to a laptop or tablet to make the practice effective. "It takes three to four days to have papers photocopied which means a lot of money has to be spent as well. The introduction of paperless system, the department could save an estimated K3000 a week," Dr Kombra said. He said so far more than 20 meetings have been conducted using paperless system. He said that a number of initiatives had been taken as well in improving the department including formalising of acquittals of cash advances, travelling allowances and salary. "We have web-based salary information system where teachers punch file numbers in order to check their salaries," said Dr Kombra. Post Courier
