A promise made by the Prime Minister Peter O’Neill was honoured yesterday, Thursday October 2, 2014, through the delivery of a K500, 000 cheque made out to the Panguna Primary School in the Autonomous Region of Bougainville.
It came as quite a shock to the school authorities, who hadn’t expected to receive the monies promised by the PM, that day. Programme Manager of the Joint Programme Management Unit, Edward Kenai, revealed that the principal of the school, in her welcome address, spoke of the monies committed to the school by the PM during his January visit and reconciliation with the people of Panguna; little did she know that the Ministerial delegation would surprise her, moments later, with the cheque presentation. The payment earmarked for the construction of a new classroom building for students of Panguna Primary, was brought to the school by Minister for National Planning and Monitoring, Charles Abel on behalf of the PM and officially presented to the school. Also present was the Vice President of the Autonomous Bougainville Government, Patrick Nisira, the Acting Chief Secretary for the ABG, Chris Siriosi, WNB Governor and Jimmy Miringtoro, member for Central Bougainville and Minister for Communication and Information in the national government. The five hundred thousand kina will go towards supporting the school’s endeavours to rebuilding its facilities for the children of Panguna; bringing much relief to the principal, teachers, students and parents. The day also saw the presentation of K200, 000 to the Tonu High School by the Ministerial delegation led by Abel. The gesture speaks volume of the joint commitment and ongoing efforts by the national government and the ABG, to rebuild and restore the Autonomous Region of Bougainville, as the region journeys forth. Core development priorities have seen the resurrecting of the Aropa Airport, the building of classrooms for Arawa and Asitavi High School, and library and classroom complex for Hamatana Primary school in Gogohe, the sealing of the Buka town roads, and other significant projects in the region.
