CLASSES have been suspended for two weeks at Pangia Secondary School in Southern Highlands Province following a fight between students from Ialibu and Pangia districts.
The fight triggered from a small incident that happened between the Kewabi and South Wiru students at the school mess on Monday afternoon. According to school principal Nick Talengo, the students took the fight out of the school premises to a nearby market. He said the students involved were supported by the locals who set up a roadblock at Ialibu junction to target South Wiru people from passing through the junction. The incident started when a Grade 11 female student from Pouka village in Ialibu was allegedly insulted by a student leader who was serving dinner at the student mess. The female and her girlfriends teased the student leader when he walked pass them, forcing him to slap her twice. Mr Talengo said that when she reported the assault to a cousin brother, the student leader was confronted, a heated argument erupted and the fight started off the school premises. Sticks and stones were used which resulted in some students sustaining minimal injuries while causing damages to windows of a vehicle belonging to the Wild Cat construction company. Mr Talengo said this is the first week of the examinations and it has been disrupted by this incident so the students will sit for their exams on the second week of their school holidays which start next week. He said the students involved will receive suspension notices from the school board after the examinations. The deputy district administrator and police at Ialibu have met with the local leaders and came to an understanding to remove the roadblock. Southern Highlands Provincial Police Commander Chief Superintendent Sibron Papoto said he had sent a taskforce to attend to the fight and police had managed to calm the situation. Local leaders are negotiating for peace while police and the school administration will investigate and deal with the students involved. Post Courier
