OK Tedi Mining Limited (OTML) has won the two top awards at this year’s PNG Apprentice of the Year and Trade Test Candidate of the Year Awards.
The PNG Apprentice of the Year Award was won by final year female electronics apprentice Bazu Haung, while the Trade Test Candidate of the Year Award was won by Pomtunai Bebere, an accounts payable officer with the company’s finance department. OTML managing director and chief executive officer Nigel Parker congratulated Haung and Bebere for bringing “great pride” to OTML. “This is a great reflection on OTML’s passion and drive to build Papua New Guinea’s next generation of young professionals,” he said. “The win has solidified OTML’s commitment as a leader in trades training,” Parker said. Haung is the second female in OTML’s history to win the award since the first female won a similar award in 2004. Haung, 26, from Morobe, defeated five other male colleagues for the top award. “I’m very happy because it’s a big achievement and a dream come true for me,” she said. Bebere, who is from Rerengre village, in North Fly district, Western, thanked his trainers and OTML for their support. He was a trainee under OTML’s Preferred Area Development (PAD) programme until recently when he was offered full-time employment with OTML. “This award has given me a lot of confidence and I see that the future looks bright for me,” he said. Bebere’s win is the first for a trainee from Western. OTML has trained over 800 apprentices since 1982. Comments are closed.
