THE Teaching Services Commission and the National Education Board have been told to find a way to reduce the number of teachers travelling to Port Moresby to sort out their outstanding claims.
Acting Education Secretary Dr. Uke Kombra told senior education officers attending a conference in Lae that lack of practical mechanisms to respond swiftly to teachers’ issues in a timely manner frustrated teachers. The issues include appointments, tenure, displacements, tenure reservations, acting appointments, postings, leave fares and entitlements, disciplinary matters, school population data, examination results, student discipline and tuition fee-free allocations. Kombra said to reduce the issues required putting in place practical standards, practices and policies. “How can we reduce the number of teachers flocking annually to Port Moresby to follow up on their claims out of frustration? “We must find a system that could help us minimise costs and ensure teachers remain in the classrooms.” TSC official Mathew Pobaya said there were processes and procedures but implementing or executing roles and responsibilities accordingly was an impediment. He said there was an increase in the number of teachers which required attention.
