TERTIARY students from North Waghi electorate in Jiwaka have received K1.9 million as school fee subsidy from their local MP and Defence Minister Dr Fabian Pok.
The students have been separated into eight zones where they will receive the payments for this year’s academic year. The fees will cover colleges, technical colleges, teachers colleges, universities and other institutions throughout the country, including driving schools. Last week parents and students from zone one, which comprises tribes Anpaken, Okan, Dambe and Dan Kombolda assembled at the Nondugl district office to thank Pok for his support. On behalf of the zone one coordinator Stanley Walpe, Cr Brema Kambi said that this was the first of its kind for the students to receive such an amount from the office of an elected leader. Kambi said that for Pok that was something which was relieving the parents from the heavy financial burden this year. He said the national government free education policy was helping students starting from the elementary to secondary schools but parents are still paying the price for students attending tertiary institutions throughout the country. He said school fee was a heavy burden faced by parents and what Pok did had rescued them out from this year’s financial burden. Kambi said parents who had more than three children attending tertiary institutions were feeling the pains of sending their children to school. “I thank minister Pok for his support towards helping us because we know that school fee is one of the heavy punishments that will affect us,” he said. He said that Pok was the only MP in the electorate who had a heart for the people to help the students. “This is something very important because education alone will help our future generations and the future of the country,” Kambi said. “We are very privileged to have this support. “This is the first of its for the parents in the North Waghi electorate to see the office of the MP coming to their aid.” Student’s representatives Ken Goi and Chris Petrus thanked Pok for the support. 4/16/2015 09:59:44 am
