PARENTS in Milne Bay will not pay project fees to schools this year.
The Provincial Executive Council last Friday endorsed a recommendation by the provincial education board to abolish project fees for all schools in the province. This comes as a further relief for parents and guardians following the introduction of free tuition fee last year by the national government. The project fee was introduced last year but it has since been found that governing boards and committees failed to utilise the money collected to fund ancillary projects and activities. The board recommended for its abolision considering the government’s decision to increase allocation for the free tuition fee by 10% this year. These could sufficiently cover costs for ancillary projects and activities. Education chairman James Rubeni, presenting the submission for the abolishing of the project fees to the PEC on Friday, said the provincial government had decided to do away with the project fees despite direction by the National Education Board (NED) direction. All boards were told to determine project fees up to a maximum of K200 per student this year. The PEC endorsed the decision by the NED to increase the tuition-fee free education from Elementary to Grade 12, and the imposition of a new one-off payment for children attending approved and permitted schools. Approved and permitted schools are international and special schools for disabled children or those with special needs. The one-off payment rates approved are K100 per child in international schools and K200 for each disabled child in special schools. The payments will not be made direct to the students but factored into the tuition fees. The national Comments are closed.
