MOUNT Hagen now has a new equipment training school which is helping young people learn how to operate excavators, bulldozers and driving of big trucks.
The construction equipment training centre was established in 2014 along the Highlands Highway after seeing that these trainings were only offered in Lae. Training centre registrar Samuel Ak said they have graduated the first students last year and 20 students are undergoing training now. Ak said the centre is expecting more students to enrol because it is the first such school in the Highlands region. He said last year graduates were now working with construction companies as operators and truck drivers. Ak said this was an opportunity for the provincial governments and the local level government presidents to sponsor youths to attend trainings. “Once graduating with certificates they go out as machine operators and truck drivers, our job is to train them,” Ak said. “This is an opportunity and I want to call on anyone who is willing to attend to the trainings to come forward and register your names.” Ak said it is one of the fast growing institutions where students from other centres are taking up their trainings. He said the centre does not borrow or hire equipment but it has its own because it is one of the recognized institutions. “We are currently extending because many are interested to attend the tannings and the number is expected to increase by this year,” Ak said. Managing director William Naginel said they were giving a second chance to the young and senior people back in the village. Naginel said it is open to anyone who is willing to come in and attend because the centre has quality and well experience people conducting trainings. He said this is the first school to be established in the Highlands and is opening the doors for many. Naginel said these trainings are important for the general public because construction companies and truck owners will need people with these qualifications. “The choice is yours. If you have a desire to take such trainings then get registered and attend class,” he said. Naginel said the centre is offering these courses because people have been missing out on these skills.
