SUMKAR MP Ken Fairweather has called for the sacking of Education Minister Nick Kuman for creating “total chaos” over the payment of project fees. He said parents at schools in Sumkar were yesterday confused over the latest directive from the Education Department for schools not to charge project fees. It cancelled an instruction last week that schools could charge parents project fees. Fairweather said Kuman last year warned that any teacher charging project fees would be sacked. But last week he said the fees should be charged. Now, he said parents and teachers were totally confused when Education Department Acting Secretary Dr Uke Kombra yesterday directed schools not to collect any project fees from students until Cabinet had discussed the matter. “In 2015, the minister said that if the teachers and the schools charged project fees, they would be charged under the Public Service Act,” Fairweather said. “They were not allowed to charge project fees. “Now, this year, there is a two-page spread in the newspaper that says you can charge project fees. “Last night, I watched on television on Karkar Island, the secretary (Kombra) coming out and saying you can’t because it’s illegal. “I think the minister should resign. This is the most stupid thing I’ve ever heard. “If he doesn’t resign, (Prime Minister Peter) O’Neill should just sack him.” The 2016 school year started yesterday. The National / PNGEducationnews

What the hell is happening at Waigani. Everyone in the country is thrown into confusion. Schools are yet to receive the TFF. We are running into the third week of first term 2016.with zero balance on most of the school's accounts.Who is responsible for this chaos; Kuman or Kombra?Sending out two different directives to the people, clearly shows Lack of consultation and communication break down at the bureaucratic level. Did the senior kitchen cabinet devise a resolution for this pressing issue? Prime Minister Peter Oniel, this is unbearable, total chaos starting today at the education sector. This two man have tarnished and spoilt your integrity. Your working and action government is now undermined. People do not trust your government. Your men have invited critiques and criticisms. This is an opportunity for the opposing power bloc to attack your government. This TFF turmoil is a political time bomb and indirect repercussion for our government and people. Parents are determined and willing to pay this project fee knowingly the situation in which the government is running into cash flow crisis. We parents are not blind or illiterate, we know the country's financial standing, and we want to pay the project fees for the good of our children but your men have betrayed you and our children. Peter Oniel, the government is yours, you have the discretionary power to remove people from positions. My recommendations to you Mr. Prime Minister; sack both the minister and the secretary.
