MOROBE students benefitting from the Gerson-Solulu Scholarship want to solve issues regarding the scholarship through proper and meaningful dialogues.
This is in regard to the 2.5 Gross Point Average (GPA) installed by Morobe Provincial Government for any student from the province to qualify for scholarship. That requirement was introduced by Governor Kelly Naru last year but was eased and is to be effected this year but the students are pushing for the old system under former Governor Luther Wenge to be re-introduced or a reduced GPA of 2.0 to be installed. President of Morobe Students at the University of Papua New Guinea Andrew Zuhukupe is reassuring the Morobe Provincial Government, Governor Kelly Naru, Acting Provincial Administrator Geoving Bilong and Morobe Administration that there will be no protest, regarding the matter. Mr Zuhukupe apologised for any uneasiness and discomfort that the statement may have caused. He said what appeared in the Post Courier stating that they will be protesting was misquoted and a misunderstanding. He and his group are also distancing themselves from comments made by Offo Olio, the president of Morobe Tertiary Students Association. “Those were his private comments and is not collective view of the entire student body,” he said. Mr Zuhukupe was referring to comments regarding students with both parents from Morobe to be put on the full scholarship without hesitation. “We will not protest but pursue a proper and meaningful dialogue to establish a common ground”. He added that he refused to comment at that time because they were still discussing issues with the authorities and did not want to jeopardise the dialogue. He said some understanding regarding the implication of the scholarship and its requirements were reached with the Education and Administration officials, last Friday, and he would the like the continuation of this talk. He further added that scholarship is not a birthright but a privilege offered to the students of Morobe and wants the privilege to be enjoyed by all Morobe students.
