MOROBE secondary schools are being hard hit by Tuition Fee Free (TFF) Policy funds not reaching them, according to spokesman, Chris Raymond.
Raymond, who is chairman of the group known as Morobe Headmasters’ and Principals’ Conference, said that at the weekend after an urgent meeting with his colleagues last Thursday. There are about 10 secondary schools in Morobe - Lae Secondary, Bugandi, Bumayong, Busu (Lae), Markham Valley, Dregerhaffen in Fisnchhafen, Grace Memorial in Wau, Menyamya, and private schools Lae Christian Academy and Coronation College. “This year, I think, there is a shortfall of funds to all schools in the country,” he told The National. “I may not know about other schools in the country, but as far as Morobe is concerned, the headmasters’ and principals’ conference was held on Thursday, and the general observation is that the TFF funding to all schools has fallen short compared to what the Government gave to us at the same time last year. “Every year, we fill in the census report, which includes the number of teachers and more importantly or TFF purposes, the number of students. “Those reports are sent to Port Moresby and the people at Waigani calculate the TFF, however, our opinion is that that is not seriously looked at. “In our case, at Lae Secondary School, we usually get two batches of K908,000. “Last year, the Government gave us K908,000 in the first batch, and K908,000 in the second batch. “This year, at the time when we are supposed to receive our first batch, they only gave us K544,000, which is about K350,000 less. “This is why I’m really have budgetary problems at my school now and it’s really affecting us. “I’ve talked to the Lae district education advisor and Lae district development authority chief executive officer Robin Calistus.” Raymond said work on a new classroom had come to a halt because of a shortfall in funds, and this, he added, was the case with all other Morobe secondary schools. “We are wondering whether the Government will pay the shortfalls, and apart from that, we want to know whether they will be paying the second batch,” he said.
