A TRAINING to build capacity for mine inspectors is underway at the Mineral Resources Authority office in Port Moresby.
The authority inspectors are undergoing four weeks of special training on “Safety in mines training and research station”. It is a training and research arm of the Queensland Government in Australia. A MRA statement said the training would enhance the inspectors’ knowledge and sharpen their skills in conducting mine inspections, risk assessment, investigations, prosecutions, communication, report writing and other regulatory functions. It will also help enhance their understanding of regulatory practices in other mining jurisdictions. The training ends next Friday. “Mines inspectorate is mandated to administer and enforce the legislative provisions relating to health and safety of persons working in mines across the country,” it said. “It is therefore paramount that the mines inspectors acquire the necessary skills to effectively discharge their legislated roles and responsibilities.” Representatives from PNG mining industry attended the training funded by the World Bank under its technical assistance programme. The mines inspectorate has 18 staff in position.
