AS a result of the tuition fee-free funding, a lot of schools are popping up around the country, Education Minister Nick Kuman says.
He said the Education Department did not really account for those schools. “We have absolutely no idea,” he said. “The education system in districts, provinces and up to the Government level must have a check and balance system. “Politicians come with a piece of paper and said minister, can you get the department to get it approved. “I’ve got teachers and students there. “How do you get schools established? “It is not an elected member’s responsibility, council or president to build a school. “You are accounted for this and make sure you go through the local level government, district and up to the provincial and Government to make sure these schools are properly built and accounted for in the education system. “Then you get a quote and if a teacher is supposed to be posted to that school, it goes by the quote. “Then we know the school is in the system,” Kuman said. Kuman said funding would go to schools that are listed and recognised by the Department of Education. Kuman made those comments during a recent media conference in Port Moresby. The department is now embarking on improving the standards of education from this year onwards.
