Mainohana Secondary School in Bereina and the Sacred Heart High school in Goilala of Central province will be closed as of next week due to shortage of funds.
The two schools come under the Diocese of Bereina Catholic Education Agency and the schools have been affected by delays in the payment of Tuition Free Fee (TFF) for this year. Bishop Rochus Tatamai of Bereina Diocese made the announcement on Friday in a urgent press conference. Bishop Tatamai said that the Diocese of Bereina Catholic Education Agency looks after 80% of the schools in the Kairiku district and it is the major education service provider in the district but unfortunately the agency has exhausted what it has budgeted for the two schools for this year. “The operation of both schools have been affected by the delays in the payment of TFF funds for this year and in the number of instances, the non payment and the shortfall of payments," he said. He also said that Sacred Heart has been particularly affected as 50% of last year’s TFF amounting to K199,000 was not paid to the school and they are still chasing after that money which they’ve already made representation to the Department of Education.
