STAFF and Students of Madina Seconday High School in New Ireland Province are in dire need of a vehicle. A wait for any form of assistance especially from government, could take forever and prove costly.
It is for this reason, the staff and students have embarked on a major fundraiser to raise much needed funds to purchase a 25seater bus for this government- run school. The need has been heightened with the fact that the dorms are not only crowded but also without water most times making students susceptible to sickness. School authorities said the need for a vehicle had also been heightened by the its continuous challenge in having to scramble every time and especially at night, when either a staff or a student has fallen ill and in need of urgent medical attention. This need and the school's initiative was revealed by staff of the school when officers of Nautilus Minerals and journalists visited the school on Tuesday. Deputy principal- administration Lucy Mohe said with the school lacks a vehicle of its own that it continued to rely on PMV's and the generosity of people living in the nearby communities for its transportation needs. "We have had to either put them on a PMV or had to ask those in the nearby communities with their own private vehicles to assist us," she said. She said the nearest health facility was 30 minutes away from the school but that it was closed. She said the school has planned several fundraisers to reach required amount however it would welcome any added help including from former students. For those who may not be familiar with Madina secondary, the school was established as an all -girls school in the 1960's. It has a student populace of 460 plus and staff strength of 23. It has in its long history produced some of the country elites, the notable ones being Lady Winifred Kamit and Margaret Elias to mention a few. Unlike in its yester-years the students are now being housed six to a cubicles, have to fetch water to flush down the septic toilets and to add to their woes they lack proper messing facilities and many end up having their meals on the floor.
