Under the Kiriwina-Goodenough Scholarship program, about 1, 127 students have been sent to study in various institutions around Papua New Guinea since 2012. Local MP Douglas Tomuriesa, who is also Minister for Forestry, said human resource issues had been plaguing his electorate but that this problem has been addressed through the scholarship program. He said students who were sponsored under the scholarship program were able to complete their studies and return to work in the electorate. “We decided to start off in 2012 with the Kiriwina-Goodenough Scholarship Program,” he said. “I can proudly say that up to now, we have sent to universities, colleges and other institutes, 1, 127 (students). “Some of those who have graduated as nurses, medical officers, as teachers are now working in our electorate.” He said previously in the electorate, there were only one or two teachers teaching three to four classes in one school but this has changed. “Today, we have filled up all those teaching positions in Kiriwina and Goodenough and that is an achievement that I am very proud of. “I hope that after the elections, if I do continue, we’ll continue those programs to make certain that the Grade 10s and Grade 12 leavers in our electorate get out and be meaningful contributors to our development on the island. “There are other things that we have worked on and these are all working in progress like education programs that we have, health programs, infrastructure programs and many other programs that we have. “I thank the government of today; it is through the DSIP program that we are able to achieve a lot of these programs,” Tomuriesa said.
