The IEA College of TAFE had their 12th graduation on Friday with the biggest number of students graduating compared to the previous years.
350 students of various courses graduated with certificates and diplomas. Forty-five percent of students come from outside of NCD. IEA College of TAFE manager Mr Phil Oakle said that this is a life changing milestone for the students and the school itself. He said IEA college of TAFE is an excellent school with qualified trainers and they give online courses as well as after hours courses especially to working people and parents who do not have the time to study during the day. IEA college of TAFE Board of governor, Ruby Zarriga also encouraged the graduates to manage themselves well and be wise in decision making so that they could live to spend time to learn more. The Government is happy that IEA has offered TAFE courses in PNG annually to skill the young people with technical skills for the employment market. Minister for Trade, Commerce and Industry Richard Maru said hundreds of the students go to Philippines each year which shows how parents are prepared to invest in such technical institutes to secure future employment for their children. “I do not believe that our Government should be investing in sending students to TAFE colleges in Australia instead, funds should be spent supporting TAFE courses in PNG which is offering the same courses and same standards, he said. Mr Maru suggested that IEA should assist in offering boarding courses in PNG so instead of sending PNG children to go study overseas, they should educate their children in their own country in schools such as IEA College of TAFE and many other institutes in PNG.
