THE Holy Cross Nissan High School in the remote atoll island of Nissan in the Autonomous Region of Bougainville is looking forward to receiving computers from their regional MP soon. Regional member for Bougainville and Minister for Bougainville Affairs, Joseph Lera made a commitment in 2014 for a project of 30 computers for the school. The commitment did not eventuate due to a lot of factors concerning the transportation of the equipment to Nissan and also no proper facility to install the computers. Lera during his recent visit to the island reaffirmed his commitment and said he would still fund the computers before the end of this year. Nissan High School at present accommodates 193 students and has a staff ceiling of 13 teachers – four females and nine males. School principal Alfred Sagolo said the computers would boost the learning capacity of the students. “Computers are very important and good for our students,” Sigolo said. “They would enhance students’ learning capacity to be more competitive in this 21st century world of technology.” He said the computers would prepare the students to excel in their studies when passing on to secondary schools or finding job opportunities. Sagolo said at the moment the school, with the support from its board of governors and former students, would be organising a corporative luncheon fund raiser to help raise fund for building a new computer lab. The fundraising drive is scheduled to be held in Buka town at the Hahela YC Hall on Aug 20.
