A FORMER Education Secretary who served the department for almost 30 years died on Tuesday after a short illness.
Dr Joseph Pagelio , from West New Britain, is survived by his wife and two children. The education department said Pagelio was a committed public servant who dedicated his life to serving the people. He began his service as a teacher and worked his way up to become Secretary for four years. His humble beginning as a secondary teacher in 1975 began in Dregerhafen High School, in Finschhafen, Morobe. In 1997 he was promoted to deputy headmaster and served at Muaina High School in Simbu, Kaiapit High School in Morobe in 1979 and Kainantu High School in 1980. He was promoted to headmaster in 1983 and served at Henganofi High School until 1984 and then at the Dregerhafen High School in 1985. He served the department from 1986 as a school inspector, maintaining and improving national education standards and ensuring quality control in curriculum implementation, teacher performance and school management systems. He did his Bachelor in Education (in-service) in 1990 and after that served the Education Department as a national education planner while studying for his masters in education. After that, he became first assistant to the Education Secretary. Pagelio completed his doctorate in education, specialising in educational leadership, at the University of Queensland in 2000. He was appointed Acting Secretary for Education in 2005 after the contract of former secretary, Peter Baki, expired. Pagelio was confirmed as Education Secretary for a four-year term from Jan 5, 2006. PNG Facts/ The national Comments are closed.
