Four people were arrested and one is nursing injuries in hospital after they were found selling answer sheets to the grade eight examinations in Western Highlands Province this week.
While the four were arrested and charged for cheating by police, one was admitted to Mt Hagen General Hospital after he was beaten up by angry students. Provincial police commander, Martin Lakari said that the crime involved a lady from Southern Highlands Province and four locals. These people reportedly sold and distributed answer sheets to students in Rabiamul, Ulga and Baisu Primary Schools on Monday. “The grade eight answer sheet papers were distributed by the Southern Highlands woman who resides in the Western Highlands,” Superintendant Lakari said. “As a parent, this sort of act really worries me,” he said. Mr Lakari also said that the Education Department was concerned about cheating which has occurred in the Highlands region, especially in the Southern Highlands, Enga and Western Highlands provinces last year in which several secondary schools’ examinations were declared failed with many grade 12 students denied places in tertiary institutions. Mr Lakari said, “The police in the province are now prepared to deal with these type of people,” he said. The Provincial Education Advisor, Stanley Maip, said although he was unaware of the arrests, he did know one local man was beaten up. Grade eight students of Ulga Primary School in the Nebilyer district attacked the man after they were told that he was selling answer sheets near the school premises on Monday. “The grade 10 and 12 examinations were completed without any hiccups. A presentation was made to the Provincial Education Board yesterday (Tuesday),” Mr Maip said. Both Mr Lakari and Mr Maip warned that selling answer sheets was a crime and those caught would be penalised. They called on the general public to inform police or the education office if they knew of any individual involved in such criminal actions. Comments are closed.
