IMPROVING the standard of education can be achieved with the availability of facilities and essential learning materials, a teacher says.
Gantom Primary School head teacher Patricia Kagai in Lae said learning comprised various elements including classrooms determined by the level of schools, student numbers, learning materials, libraries, funding, teachers and accommodation. All the resources complement each other to assist learning. Gantom needs more new classrooms to replace sago and kunai-thatched roofs built more than 10 years ago. Kagai said Huon Gulf MP Ross Seymour allocated K10,000 to build a double classroom for 128 Grade 8 students. “We still need another double classroom, teacher’s accommodation including proper water sanitation,” Kagai said. “Good classrooms equipped with essential learning resources will enhance a student’s academic ability.” Seymour also promised to fund two teachers quarters and improve the West Taraka health centre facility, a police house and vehicle. He also gave K20,000 to youths groups in 20 streets to start various income-generating projects. “Having almost 74 primary schools in Huon Gulf, I am responsible to give respective schools a double classroom each,” Seymour said.
