VOCATIONAL schools in Papua New Guinea lack facilities, Lions Morata Technical Vocational Centre business studies and tourism and hospitality teacher, Joanne Haro said.
Haro, who was part of 15 teachers from the centre who travelled to Jayapura, Indonesia, in September to conduct a comparative study of vocational schools there, said centres there were properly equipped with facilities. Teachers who had travelled to Jayapura learnt a lot and realised that PNG vocational centre are no match to other countries as there was no facilities to support students learning. She said their four-days trip to ayapura saw them visit six vocational schools that gave them a new perspective of what vocational centres in PNG missed. She said centres there had curriculum that was in line with industrial standards, which made it easier for their students to blend into work place after graduating. She said the PNG government must develop vocational centres as it trained a lot of skillful students. “Skills are very important because you need to have skills to develop something. So government should develop our vocational centres and include industrial standard so that it provides quality learning for students,” she said. Centre manager Hillary Damke said the trip was an eye opener for teachers and had helped them to understand what vocational centres were like out there. He said the trip was fully funded by the school which was about K50,000 and was for a worthy cause as it had given a new perspective to teachers. He said while there they saw how vocational schools there were set and organised with their advanced facilities and adequate training materials and equipment for students. He said the government should fund training facilities and equipment and provide proper training for teachers with exchange programmes for teachers and students. Comments are closed.
