ENGA will soon see the establishment of a polytechnical institute in the province.
Minister for Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology Malakai Tabar made the announcement when he presented a cheque for K3 million to Enga Governor Sir Peter Ipatas for the implementation of infrastructure projects. “Papua New Guinea has a responsibility to make sure we bring ourselves to that standard of acceptance (qualification framework),” Tabar said. Tabar said according to the academic audits in the Garnaut-Namaliu Report of 2010, the Department of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology had the responsibility in making sure every student from tertiary institutions in PNG were accepted to practise in Australia, and they graduate with the same qualification with any student from their higher institutions. Sir Peter said the quality of the education had dropped because of poor teaching and resource support from the elementary level to secondary and university. “If you have students who are not learning at the lower level, obviously you don’t have the quality at the top end,” Sir Peter said. Department of Higher Education Acting Secretary Professor David Kavanamur said Enga was now home to an increasing number of world-class institutes of higher education. He said Enga was progressing towards the direction of establishing its university.
