IMPARTING knowledge and life skills in any setting is an important way of life that should never be undermined, an official said.
Sambao Abol, 27-year-old, from the Kompipi tribe in Wabag, Enga, told The National that he never planned on becoming an educationist until he applied for a teaching job at Jubilee Institute two years ago. “I was eventually accepted so here I am lecturing on Information technology and statistics to students from around the country,” he said. “It gives me great pleasure to be sharing my knowledge with students. Although it may sound a little weird as I was a student at the University of Papua New Guinea three years ago, it’s quite satisfying being a lecturer and tutor. “First-year students find it a little tough getting to know the basics of computers like using basic applications such as Microsoft Word but then as time goes by, they get the hang of it. I was once in their shoes in my time at UPNG as Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science student where getting to know basic computer concepts was a challenge but with guidance and practice, I learnt more about Information Technology. “It’s really satisfying as a lecturer to see your students develop under your wing especially during tutorial session.” Abol said tutorial session were an important part of universities as they gave the lecturer and students a chance to communicate one-on-one about areas of difficulty. He said the close communication allowed both parties to understand each other better and find fitting approaches to dealing with challenging subjects. The National
