QUALITY education is an important pathway for progress of individuals, societies and nations, a PNG Teachers’ Association official says.
PNGTA General Secretary Ugwalubu Mowana urged the people of Trobriand Islands in Milne Bay to look after school facilities and teachers. He said social environment was conducive for schools to operate without interruption of classes, enabling students to learn well. Speaking at the World Teachers’ Day last Monday at Losuia Primary School, he called on the Kiriwina Goodenough MP Douglas Tomuriesi to invest sufficient funds from the district grants in teacher training and professional enhancement. The theme of this year’s World Teachers’ Day is “Empowering Teachers, Building Sustainable Societies” Mowana renewed the PNGTA’s earlier calls for the Government to:
Mowana said the PNGTA together with its worldwide affiliates through education international is mobilising to send clear message around the globe to highlight the importance of teacher empowerment for providing quality education and building sustainable societies for all. He said teacher empowerment should entail the provision of decent working conditions, well-resourced, safe, healthy and conducive working environments, trust, professional autonomy, academic freedom, high quality initial training and continuous professional development among others.
