MOST parents are not feeling there is free or tuition fee-free (TFF) education because they are always
paying, a teachers’ representative says. Morobe Teacher’s Union president Mark Nanu said if there was free education, then funds should be in school accounts on time because they needed money to start and run the academic year and schools depended on parents for that. Nanu, who is also the deputy head teacher at Omili Primary School, in Lae, said the school did not receive enough TFF funds last year. “About K680,000 is still outstanding, and we managed to run the school with parental support fees alone,” he said. He said the school needed around K2 million to cover the needs of teachers, the curriculum, students and infrastructure. Nanu praised the parents, saying he was happy that they were always helping. “Parents are always supportive with the students’ education, and not the provincial education division or the politicians will help with fees,” he said. “The new housing complex that we are using came from that support.” The National
