THE Education Department is determined to see the new Standards-Based Education (SBE) curriculum implemented this year.
Education Department Acting Secretary Dr Uke Kombra said teachers were being trained on the new curriculum. “We started training teachers (on the SBE curriculum) last year,” Kombra said. “We have trained teachers in nine provinces on the curriculum teaching approach. “We still have 13 more provinces to go and we hope to cover them as soon as possible this year. “So once they (all teachers in the country) are fully trained, it (SBE curriculum) will commence.” The nine provinces are East New Britain, West New Britain, Central, National Capital District, Gulf, East Sepik, West Sepik, Jiwaka and Eastern Highlands. The SBE curriculum will start in those nine provinces because the teachers have been trained. “What the Standards-Based Curriculum really means is how the teachers prepare the lessons and how they teach those lessons and how the students will learn from them,” he said. “It’s basically the heart of teaching, or how the teachers teach and transfer the knowledge and content from themselves to the students. “This is what standards-based education curriculum is. The content is already in the schools. So it’s just a basic methodology of teaching that we have emphasises during the training of teachers in the nine provinces.” The National

Focus must also be on teachers because if they don't live by standard in their personal, family life then the outcome of SBE won't be achieved. A teacher, trainer or tutor may have a standard in educational knowledgebut does he/she have a standard in LIFE
