THE Education Department will try to help students in schools in the OK Tedi mine area preparing for examinations next month.
Education Department Acting Secretary Dr Uke Kombra yesterday responded to reports that the Diwai International School and two others in Tabubil would be closed on Friday. Kombra said his main concern was the students’ examination which was just around the corner. “The only issue I have and we should address is the examinations because the Grade 12s will sit for their written expression (exam) on August 10 which is not too far away,” he said. “So that’s the most critical issue as they must sit it. If they don’t do the exam, then it will be an issue. “I hope that the local (provincial) administration will be able to make some arrangements and provide some emergency relief so that Grade 12 students can remain in the affected schools.” He said the Western provincial administration should work out how to help students sit for their annual examinations. “We normally let the provincial government and administration as they are in a much better position to understand the local context,” he said.
