THE Education Department is placing an emphasis on quality of teachers to get the result of quality learning for students. Acting Secretary Dr Uke Kombra said they are now focussed on improving the quality of education from elementary to primary level. The department has now increased a year of study to teacher training of teachers as well as put stop in training teachers outside of the colleges to see improvement in teaching quality. “The Department of Education and the minister is very serious about the quality of teachers that we train,” he said. “They must reach a level that they are competent in order to teach well in schools. “The teachers training institution must also ensure that they have certain standards that they have to meet.” He said an example was the stopping of elementary teachers training off campus arrangement or a distance mode arrangement. “Any new elementary school teacher that we train will have to be trained at a teachers college so they will be on a full time basis,” he said. Another is to increase the number of teacher training years from two to three years. Three years is deliberated so that the teacher has more time to be competent when he or she goes out to teach in a classroom, he said, adding that it would improve teaching.
