EAST Sepik teachers, like their Madang counterparts, intend to stay away from classes when schools resume in about three weeks until their leave fares are paid.
While Madang teachers had received a little each, East Sepik teachers have not been paid anything. PNG Teachers Association representative Andrew Kopta said the rights of the teachers to travel to their home provinces on breaks to spend time with their families had been denied by government agencies involved in the processing of their leave fares. “East Sepik teachers have not received their leave fare entitlements for 2017,” he said. “The governor is saying K200,000 is allocated to East Sepik. This is not enough, a teacher will be getting K150 to K200. “We also agree with the teachers in Madang to boycott classes until our pending issues on leave fares are addressed properly. “There was a cut in the previous years and now East Sepik is only given K200,000.” Kopta said such problems needed to be addressed by the Department of Treasury, the Teaching Service Commission and the provincial government. He wants the PNGTA headquarters to back teachers in the provinces to express their frustration.
