EARLY childhood education and elementary schools are important foundation for any child to progress, Jiwaka Governor Dr William Tongamp said during a forum at the University Of Goroka in Eastern Highlands.
Tongamp, a former lecturer and associate professor in one of universities in Japan, told educationists from all over the country attending the forum that early education wasimportant in any child education. He said if they started their children’s education in a right way at the beginning, they would quickly catch up with many things and learn quick as they continued their education. “Elementary school and early childhood education are two most important things that parents must not overlook when sending your kids to school,” Tongamp said. He said he recognized the importance of elementary schools in Jiwaka by allocating K1m in this year’s budget to build 300 double classrooms for all elementary schools. “In Jiwaka, I have 300 elementary schools and I want all to have proper classrooms where children must sit properly and learn because this is where they start foundation of their education,” Tongamp said. He said more than 100 double classrooms were constructed and nearing completion while 200 classrooms are yet to be built. He said education sector in Jiwaka is improving every year but, there is many challenges that needs to be addressed. Tongamp said during the last three years, he built four new high schools and two secondary schools. He said the number of Grade 12 students sitting for their national examination has increased from 400 last year to 1,100 this year. “This is a big achievement but, I want every institutions must manage their tuition free fee money properly and build more infrastructure and improve the standard of their respective institutions,” he said. He commended Minj Secondary School under the administration of Maiya Velentine for building new infrastructures using the TFF money and urged others to do the same.
