TEACHERS appointment tenure should be increased from three to five years, the parliamentary referral committee on education has recommended.
This was among 13 recommendations contained in its first report on teachers’ salaries to Parliament on Friday. Committee chairman Robert Ganim, who is Wabag MP, presented the report titled "Strongim tisa; strongim clasrum". Among the recommendations are the call for a review to be conducted by the Education Department and Teaching Services Commission into teachers’ salaries; increase teachers’ appointment tenure from three years to five years; government to conduct audit into leave fare and pay leave fare into teachers’ accounts; review process and procedures of retirement; and retrenchment and resignation of teachers are among others. Mr Ganim said the committee had taken upon itself to inquire into the teachers’ salaries and related issues after setting up seven terms of reference to guide it. The audit report was the result the committee visited teachers from all four regions and sought views at public forums. The Education Department, Teaching Services Commission and PNG Teachers Association appeared before the committee and similar issues of concern over teachers’ salaries and entitlements. Mr Ganim said the problems faced by teachers with their salaries and entitlements have become part of the national education system over the years since independence. "Teachers seem to be forgotten public servants in PNG. Despite this, teachers have remain the most hardworking and determined public servants. "The future of our children has been their concern and determination, despite all the difficulties they have encountered during their teaching careers, endured from strength and breadth of this country," Mr Ganim told Parliament. Mr Ganim said the Government’s free tuition policy is focus on children to attend school without much consideration on the plight of teachers. Comments are closed.
