PORT Moresby National High School students are conducting a two-day clean-a-thon in the National Capital District.
The annual event is an initiative of the school administration, staff and parents to engage Grade 11 students in community services. They collected rubbish in public places and visited clinics in NCD to hand out Christmas gifts. School principal David Diowai said the purpose was to develop the mental capacity of students to become responsible citizens. “We are trying to develop the attitudes and characters of students to grow up in a right way so when they get out of school, they live as responsible citizens and keep their places clean,” he said. He said the programme was conducted in the last week of every school year. Some students were sent to the Laloki Psychiatric Centre, while others cleaned up the Port Moresby General Hospital compound. He said the programme was supported by parents and the NCD Commission, which provided garbage bins, gloves, rubbish bags, masks and trucks for rubbish disposal. “I told parents it is very important to engage their kids in community services so they become community members, not just a family member or a Port Moresby National High School member, but a wider prospective member of the community. “When you become a community member, you gain respect to address the welfare issues faced by the community including yourselves,” he said. Diowai said the message of the programme was to make the government and other authorities to organise a day for the city to have a clean-a-thon programme and make it an annual event. “I encourage all the other schools in the NCD to include such programmes in their schools so our children grow up with a very responsible attitude and mindset,” he said. Student representative Bera Atahu said through the initiative, the students were able to meet and share with people with special needs. “The initiative helps to build our characters and attitudes to be better and responsible members of the larger community,” he said. The National Comments are closed.
