THERE is one class in one high school in Morobe which has 123 students, which is part of the increasing imbalance in the ratio of students to teachers in classrooms, and that is a great concern to the education authorities, an official says.
Gibson Dom, Morobe’s senior standards officer, revealed that without naming the high school, and called on all schools administrations not to enroll anymore students, as inflation of the student enrollment will greatly affect quality education, the Tuition Fee Free policy funding, strain the materials availability and pose a health threat. He said the strain on a teacher managing and imparting knowledge to a crowded classroom in a space of 40 minutes for a particular subject period is too much, which can affect the teacher physically, emotionally and psychologically. “The teacher in turn cannot impart knowledge properly and effectively to students and cannot closely monitor the development of each individual student, which can lead to poor academic results,” he said. Dom, a former secondary school principal, said the TFF funds were calculated from the student enrolment figures from the last academic year and an unexpected influx and enrolment figure would affect the sound management of the funds. “I call on the administrations of schools, especially high schools, to stop enrolling more students because the enrolment figures are too much, there will be an imbalance in the student-teacher ratio,” he said. “We have one high school in Morobe which has 123 students in one class and is probably the biggest in the country. Most schools have enrolled more than 50 to 60 students in a class at the moment in Morobe. “What I am concerned about is their health, a disease can be easily be spread in a crowded room, the student-teacher ratio, and the teacher-student contact where the teacher cannot attend to individual pupils.” The National
