The national Catholic School Principals’ Conference has recommended to the Government not to abolish the Grade 8 and 10 examinations. The principals of all Catholic high and secondary schools in the country presented their stand in a petition to the acting Education Secretary Dr Uke Kombra last Friday. The recommendations were made after a week-long conference held at St Joseph’s Technical school at Seven- Mile outside Lae, Morobe. Speaking on behalf of other government and permitted schools in the country, the principals outlined in a petition that if the current status quo of students sitting for Grade Eight and 10 examinations continued, it would maintain high academic quality and avoid lack of infrastructure and other related problems of students moving onto the next education level. The Catholic principals also recommended to the Education Department to include religious education as a subject for Grade Eight and 10 certificates in Catholic high and secondary schools. President of the Catholic school principals’ conference and principal of St Ignatius Secondary School in Vanimo, Hillary Suamba, presented the petition on behalf of all the principals and asked Dr Kombra to facilitate their request with the Government through the Education Department. Dr Kombra responded by saying that the Education Department was exiting the Grade Eight and 10 examinations just for the selection process.
