Catering Facilities in POM Sign MOU to Participate in Biodiesel Research and Development Project1/28/2014
Various catering facilities in Port Moresby including Ela Beach restaurant have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the project to dispose their used vegetable oil as feedstock source for this research project. Although there has been a delay in the signing of the MOUs due to some catering facilities not opting to participate in this research project other catering facilities are in the process of signing a MOU with the project in the next couple of weeks. According to Ela Beach restaurant General Manager, Antoinnette Mapai this is a good opportunity not only to support environmental pollution reduction programs but also properly dispose used vegetable oil from the restaurant.
The project commenced in 2013 and is scheduled for completion at the end of 2014 under the leadership of the principal investigator, Dr Fifaia Matainaho who is an Adjunct Associate Professor of the university and is also currently the Chief Operations Officer (COO) for EdaRANU. The Dean for the School of Science & Technology Dr Darren Bito is the co-principal investigator and is assisted by researchers from the school faculty and research assistant Linta Qalopui who is a Master of Philosophy candidate in Chemistry. The research team also includes Elisapesi Manson as the project manager and Paul Martin of Grown Fuel, Australia as the project consultant. Renovation and building work on the site to house the biodiesel plant at the PAU campus are underway to meet high standard of safety, environmental and technical regulations. The feedstock collection will begin next month as soon as the MOUs with catering facilities are signed and the project plans to commission the plant on the site by the end of May for the project research experiments and testing. The project team has been working hard to complete the first stage of the project in its first year and looks forward to achieving significant milestones this new year. Paul Martin of Grown Fuel, Australia affirms that it is fantastic that the project has come this far. source: www.pau.ac..pg
