Schools and institutions should enhance education by including religion, a high school deputy principal says.
Port Moresby National High School deputy principal administration Matthew Maito said teachers focused on physical, mental, social and emotional aspects of teaching students and paid less attention to the spiritual part of learning. “In order for us to groom a future generation to live a positive life, we must focus an equal attention in teaching religion,” he said. Maito said his school had been providing religious education for its students over the years and it has had a profound effect on the spiritual lives of the students. “Our school motto is: ‘Do great things with God’s help’ and we have been upholding this principle and it is a main factor that contributes to the students’ excellence in their academic performance,” Maito said. He said the school had an agreement with established churches and every Wednesday a spiritual leader from each church came to the school and took students for religious education.
