BALOB Teachers Colleges in Lae wants to become the leader in teacher education in the country by introducing a Degree in Teaching Primary Education, says its chairman Bob Aaron. Mr Aaron wants the Morobe provincial Government to partner with the Institution and the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Papua New Guinea to improve the institution’s learning and residential infrastructure to meet demand. Morobe Governor Kelly Naru said Morobe provincial government are grateful to hear of the progress that Balob is making towards nation building and its progress to introducing degree programs. "It is respectable and I am grateful to hear of your progress. It is something significant,’ Mr Naru said. Principal Jerry Hendingao said the school is in the process of introducing a Degree in Teaching Primary Education and have their papers already lodged with the Department of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology. Mr Hendingao said the policy document has been approved by the department, but it wants their infrastructure improved or new ones built to accommodate the increase enrolments. He said Balob is the number one teacher training institution since it graduates around 500 trainee teachers every year. The college also oversees the teaching faculty of the newly established Heldsburg Elementary Teachers College in Finschhafen district and introducing the degree program will lift its prestige. Mr Aaron said his board is now encouraging the lecturers at Balob to be either Masters or Doctorate holders to teach at the institution when it starts its Degree programs. Mr Naru, while congratulating Balob, said the institution should have been offering Degree programs a couple of years back if the Lutheran University had gotten off the ground as planned. Otherwise it will be a cheap degree at Balob teachersCollege. Has a reputation of enrolling, grade eight, grade 10 and F grade students even the buai sellers at Hunta market. Has contributed so much to the down fall of Education standrad in Morobe Province over the past years. Improve the selection criteria and it must be purely on merit. Assess students individually, see their performance, those who cannot cope must must be terminated.. No group work should be entertained as Balob use to do which many free riders riding freely on the back of hard working geniune students. where are we heading as a nation in terms of Human resource development if such institution keep on enrolling unqualified students with false certificate????
