IMBONGGU MP and Works Minister Francis Awesa paid K69,593 in fees for 45 students studying at Mendi School of Nursing last Tuesday through his district funds.
The first, second and final year students thanked the district development authority chief executive officer Allan Kayabe, who was there to present the cheque on their MP’s behalf. Kayabe said nursing was a demanding job because of the new provincial health authority bill introduced and an aging work force which needed more graduate nurses to fill the gaps. “Nursing is a noble profession and many health centres and aid posts in the country need your service. It is the MP’s aim and vision to support human resource,” he said. He said Awesa has renovated and improved some heath facilities in the district and would build an aid posts towards the borders of Mendi Munihu and Imbonggu districts that would need the service of the nurses. Kayabe expressed discontent for a foul play which included staffs and students liaising and misusing students’ school fees paid in 2013. “We have received complaints of students collaborating with staffs of the administration to arrange for cash while students were denied of their share from previous funds for school fee assistance. We are aware of the transaction so let that be the last,” he said. A letter attached with the cheque was given advising that no refunds are to be made and unused funds due to failure of students’ withdrawal or dismissal to be paid back to the district treasury account. Deputy school principal Conrad Tawila thanked Awesa for giving priority to education as it contributes to foster peace, democracy and economic growth as well as improving health and reducing poverty. “Human resource development is important and Awesa is doing the right thing.”
