A GROUP of Australian students is travelling around New Ireland – on bicycles.
The students are from Mentone Grammar School in Victoria. They are enjoying travelling the scenic and beautiful 260-km Boluminski Highway in New Ireland which stretches along the entire length of the island from Namatanai in the south to Kavieng in the north. It is a programme for students that the school carries out annually. It gives them a chance to interact with the local people, sample local food, visit interesting sites and get entertained by village cultural groups. On Wednesday, the 19 students and four teachers travelled through Poliamba and then stopped for lunch at Laraibina to see the famous eels of the village. “We arrived in Port Moresby two weeks ago and did Kokoda for four to five days,” group member Lily McCre told The National. “We had a village stay in Oro (Northern), and then came to Nusa Island where we had a bit of a rest and did some surfing, kayaking. Everyone’s really enjoying it. “The school runs the trip twice a year but individual students only go once.”
