AUSTRALIA is helping in the training of law and justice sector professionals in Papua New Guinea, Australian High Commissioner to Papua New Guinea Deborah Stokes (pictured) says.
The Australian Government is funding a diploma of government (management) course to assist in the work of law and justice professionals in Papua New Guinea. Twenty-five law and justice professionals, selected from over 60 applications, commenced the course last month, tailored by IEA TAFE for the law and justice sector to strengthen the human aspects of leadership and management skills. Stokes said the Australian Government was committed to supporting PNG officials to improve the management and leadership of the Papua New Guinea public service and law and justice was a sector they saw as a high priority for the support. “The five-month part-time course aims to foster linkages within the law and justice sector and a greater understanding of various agencies roles and responsibilities.” “For the first time this year the course includes provincial representatives,” she said. Stokes said that over K800,000 had been invested for these courses as part of the Australian Government’s support to the Papua New Guinean law and justice sector. “Australia’s support to leadership and management in the law and justice sector will be complemented by the establishment of the Pacific Leadership and Governance Precinct, as announced by the Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop in her most recent visit to PNG.” The National
