LIHIR Gold Limited, a subsidiary of Newcrest Mining Limited, recently concluded a four year apprenticeship training program for locals with the staging of a graduation ceremony.
The event is an annual one for the company and the program saw 27 participants, including eight women, graduate at the Lihir Technical Training Centre (LTTC). They graduated in disciplines like electrical, metal fabrication welding, refrigeration, machining, heavy equipment, diesel and maintenance fitting. Hubert Sikewing scooped up the Newcrest Lihir 2013 Apprentice of the Year award. The runners up award went to Vivian Turtur. Power and Utilities manager John McCormick congratulating all the participants. “Apprentices are the future of Lihir and this is an opportunity to start this journey. “One-hundred-and-thirty-five apprentices have now graduated from the Lihir Technical Training Centre, which is regarded as one of the best technical training institutes in Papua New Guinea. “This is not the end of learning, it is just the beginning,” Mr McCormick said. PNG’s National Apprenticeship Trade and Testing Board (NATTB) assistant secretary, Mr Billy Bori was among the host of guests who attended the event. Mr Bori commended Newcrest on their training and development programs for Papua New Guineans and for the people of Lihir. The NATTB recognized one of the locals, Judith Maith, by presenting her with the NATTB Candidate of the Year Award. Ms Maith had participated in the 2013 NATTB Apprentice of the Year competition in Port Moresby in the trade testing category. The Newcrest Lihir Technical Training Centre is a purpose built, multi-million kina training and development facility which was opened in 2008 by New Ireland Governor Sir Julius Chan. Post Courier

The chances of any young star from any other Provinces apart from New Ireland attending this Apprentice Training Centre is zero to nil. The recruitment focus first on Lihirians and the smaller islands around (Tabar, Masat, etc) then New Irelanders and stops there. For many years LGL (now Newcrest) employees from other Province have tried to get their spouse enrolled but to no avail. Enrolment is very unfair to a point. I hope and pray this changes so opportunities can be extended to other provinces.....
