A school in East Sepik Province has been shut down due to allegations by landowners of misappropriations of funds
Ambunti High School saw the closure of its administration building after frustrated landowners saw fit to take action over allegations of school funds being misappropriated by the school principal. The principal was alleged to have misused funds, including those that had been allocated by the provincial government. School vice chairman and landowner Stanley Kongi told the Post-Courier that the principal had held on to funds and even used some for personal reasons. He said the action taken to close the building would only rebound if the current principal stepped down from his office. Mr Kongi said there had not been any upgrade of the school since the current headmaster took office. “The high school is there for the students and I as the vice president and also a concerned parent would like to see a change and that won’t happen with the current head teacher,’’ he said. The administration office has been closed for more than five days and there will be no changes until the principal steps down. The school principal Albert Nara stated in response to the allegation that he was not sure whether the vice chairman had evidence of misappropriation and has claimed that he has records of expenditure of funds for the school. Mr Nara said the school account now holds a sum of K170, 000 and would be used as funding for the development of the school. “There is no misappropriation of any funds allocated for this school; I will make sure that I have all evidence proving my stand in the situation,’’ he said. Mr Nara had no further comments for the closure of the administration block. The administration block is the only school building that is closed as school has not begun for this year. However, it is still unclear whether these allegations are in favour of the student body and if it may indeed bring in development from future decisions of the board and the landowners. Post Courier Comments are closed.
